The Last Song at the Inn

Guests heard a woman singing in an inn's empty dining room shortly before a locked bedroom was discovered occupied by a dead stranger.

At the Crown and Lantern, guests heard a woman singing shortly before midnight.

The landlord searched the building and found nobody.

Upstairs, a locked bedroom contained the body of an unknown man.

The window was bolted.

There were no signs of violence.

Cryer asked the guests to repeat the song.

Nobody could remember the words.

Only the tune.

The next morning the innkeeper discovered the same tune had been written into the dead man's notebook.

Beside it was one sentence:

She promised to sing before I died.
