The Widow's Black Gloves
A widow was accused of stealing jewellery from her employer, but Cryer found the missing diamonds sewn into an unexpected garment.
Mary Fenwick was dismissed after diamonds disappeared from her employer's dressing room.
The mistress insisted only Mary had entered.
Cryer examined Mary's belongings and found nothing.
He then noticed that the mistress wore black gloves despite the summer heat.
Inside one glove, beneath a loose lining, were two diamonds.
The mistress had hidden them herself to claim against an insurance policy and intended to blame the servant.
Cryer recovered the remaining stones from a second glove.
Mary was cleared before the evening train.
