The Letters from the Dead

A grieving man received three letters in his dead wife's handwriting, each arriving years after her death.

Edwin Price brought Cryer a letter bearing his wife's handwriting.

She had died four years earlier.

Then a second letter arrived.

Then a third.

Each contained information about ordinary events that had not yet occurred.

Cryer examined the ink and paper. Both were modern.

He suspected forgery until the third letter warned Price not to enter the old mill on Friday.

Price ignored it.

A wall collapsed shortly after he stepped inside.

Cryer could never establish who sent the letters.

No fourth letter arrived.
