The Silent Gunshot

A factory owner was found shot dead, yet nobody in the crowded building heard the weapon fired.

Henry Seddon was found dead in his office shortly after the lunch bell.

The bullet wound was unmistakable.

Yet none of the forty workers nearby had heard a gunshot.

Cryer examined the office and found a thick felt-lined coal sack behind the desk. Inside was a small revolver wrapped in cloth.

The killer had fired the weapon from inside the sack, muffling much of the report.

Seddon's bookkeeper confessed after Cryer discovered powder residue inside his cuffs.

The missing wages had been blamed on the factory owner.

The real thief had been sitting in the office beside him.
